Downtown in April is always buzzing. The weather is perfect, and there are activities aplenty. As you're planning out your month, be sure to spend a little time in downtown Sarasota to get in on the fun.
Starting the month off right, the Sarasota Film Festival runs from April 1-10 with over 250 films being screened at the Hollywood 20. For the duration of the festival, you're quite likely to some celebrities taking in the scene as they make their way to the parties, panels, and conversations all around the downtown area and beyond. The Sarasota Film Festival has historically presented some really amazing films, and watching them with the producers, cast, and director and sitting in on the Q&As afterward is always a memorable experience.
Pet lovers should check out the 10th Annual Paws on the Catwalk Luncheon at the Ritz-Carlton on April 7. With music, shopping from an array of Sarasota's most popular boutiques, and appearances by local comedy legends Les McCurdy and Ken Sons, this event supports the Humane Society of Sarasota County, our largest no-kill shelter, and culminates in a must-see-to-believe fashion show that promises to get everyone's tails wagging.
From April 15-17, be sure to visit Sarasota's Bayfront for the 33rd Annual Suncoast Boat Show. Hundreds of boats will be on display, so if you're thinking of taking full advantage of living in Sarasota, this event would be great research for getting your own spot in the water. If you already have a boat, plenty of vendors will show off the latest boating products and accessories.
That same weekend, you can also catch the 14th Annual Downtown Sarasota Art and Craft Festival from April 16-17. You may never see Main Street so packed with handmade crafts. Beyond the paintings, pottery, photographs, jewelry, clothing, and other bursts of creativity, they will also have a “Green Market” with an assortment of plants and flowers. If you're looking to decorate with style and soul, this is an event you won't want to miss.
Something about spring brings out the poet in people, and Sarasota now celebrates that through the Poetry Life Festival. On April 22-23, the beautiful Florida Studio Theatre will be filled with a celebration of human expression, featuring nationally-known poets engaging the community in readings and talks.
Of course, to see downtown Sarasota really come alive, just head to Lemon and Main any Saturday morning for the Sarasota Farmers Market. In addition to local growers offering up fresh produce, a myriad of vendors, musicians, and other performers come together to change the downtown landscape for a few hours in a great way to spend a Saturday morning.
