As you may have noticed, things get a little hot around here in August. This month, you've got plenty of great opportunities to really heat things up, and the added bonuses of getting to cool down.
The first week of August is smoking with the Florida State DanceSport Championships on August 2–7 at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota! To celebrate its 44th anniversary, the DanceSport series has added Country Western Dance, Pro Open Showdance, Rising Star, and Open Grand Championships to this year's events.
On August 4-7, the annual Sarasota Slam Fishing Tournament is taking place at Marina Jack with Billfish, Wahoo, Tuna, Grouper, Snapper, Trout, Redfish, Offshore, and Inshore Divisions. The tournament is full of events, starting with the Sponsor Party on Thursday and culminating in Sunday afternoon's weigh-in and awards ceremony, followed by a dockside pool party with live music by Blue Mason Barter. Partial proceeds from the event go toward supporting Harvest House, which serves Sarasota's homeless community.
For all of you Deadheads out there, August 7 is the 8th Annual Very Merry Jerry Day at Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center. This family-friendly event starts at 4 p.m. and features the music of Passerine, RJ Howson, the Schmitz Brothers Band, and Ship of Fools, Sarasota's favorite Grateful Dead tribute band.
All summer long, kids have been dressing up and having fun at the Kids' Summer Beach Runs on Siesta Beach (Tuesdays) and Brohard Beach in Venice (Wednesdays). Tuesday, August 9 and Wednesday, August 10 are the last chance to participate this season! Registration for the one-mile run begins at 5:30 p.m., and the run starts promptly at 6:30. Each run has its unique theme, with kids encouraged to dress up for prizes! This week, the theme is '60's Beach Bash.
Since the kids will be heading back to school soon, now's the time to soak up the end of summer vacation. On August 13, the Venice Farmer's Market and Venice MainStreet present the 5th Annual Venice Scavenger Hunt for Kids throughout the city for children of all ages. Starting at 8:30 a.m., the first 100 kids to the gazebo in Centennial Park will receive a goodie bag with spy maps and clues, and have until 11:30 to complete the hunt.
To cool down, the Sarasota YMCA Splash Bash is coming up on August 19, with the water park at the Evalyn Sadlier Jones Branch free and open to the public from 5-8 p.m.
August 26 marks the end of the 15th annual summer music series known as "Friday Fest" at the Van Wezel. They'll be closing out the summer from 5-9 p.m. with live music from Rebelheart, featuring a contemporary blend of country music. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the show followed by a beautiful sunset. Outside food and drink is prohibited, but vendors will be on hand with delicious bites and refreshment. This free concert series takes place rain or shine, and moves indoors in case of inclement weather.
If you want to take part in a true Sarasota tradition, consider auditioning for the 13th Annual Sarasota Medieval Fair on August 27-28. The actual fair isn't until November, but if you get a part, you'll have plenty of time to rehearse your accent, swordplay, and jousting skills.
If you're going to live in paradise, you might as well make the most of it. Don't let the last of summer's heat keep you down; get out there and enjoy!
