Whenever you move to a new place, you're faced with the task of trying to find the best of what you like. One of those "best of" things most everybody looks for is comfort foods, and few foods are as comforting as a good burger. While Sarasota has a number of great chains that specialize in burgers, like Square 1, Five Guys, and Culver's, the best burgers you're going to find are in Sarasota's original restaurants.
If you love a good burger, these are the top ten places I really encourage you to try. However, I'll let you come to your own conclusion about which one is actually the best.
The Hob Nob – We have to start with Sarasota's oldest drive in. The burgers are good, having a 'made in the back yard" flavor, but the experience of dining at The Hob Nob is a rare, nostalgic trip into yesteryear.
Mandeville Beer Garden – As one of the new kids in town, located in the Rosemary District, Mandeville has quickly become a favorite with locals, both for their menu of comfort food and their incredible selection of craft beers.
White Buffalo Saloon - Whether you're building your own burger or trying some of their signatures (like the White Buffalo Burger, featuring 8 ounces of Angus beef topped with pulled pork and an onion ring), this is also a great place to catch live country music and have some fun.
Indigenous - You can't get more local than Indigenous in beautiful Laurel Park. All of the food is locally sourced, and their version of a burger, with cheddar cheese and bacon jam over Niman Ranch grass fed beef, lets you taste the freshness of local food.
Shakespeare's – Offering up some of the most ingenius recipes for burgers around town, Shakespeare's is nestled between Southgate and Siesta Key. The Caramelized Onion and Brie burger is something you'll write home to mother about... after you wake up from your nap.
Patrick's 1481 – This is the one that usually wins the “Taster's Choice” awards as Sarasota's best burger, and their Monday night $5 burger special has become a weekly ritual for a great many locals. In business for over 30 years, Patrick's is a Downtown Sarasota staple.
If you're looking for a good burger, these are my recommendations for which ones to try first. For those who live here, you may have some other favorites, so please feel free to mention them in the comments below. Whatever you do, be sure to keep enjoying life here in paradise.
