The community of Lake Sarasota started around one of the Florida tourist attractions that helped make Florida the destination it has become. From 1955 to 1959, the Sunshine Springs & Gardens offered visitors twenty acres of tropical gardens, complete with swan boat tours, and a water ski show on a 400-acre, man-made lake, featuring water-skiing elephants and the "Aquabelles" female ski tea. What remains of the lake is now the 16-acre Lakeview Park, which features a playground, picnic area, canoe/kayak access to the lake, and a paw park, and parts of Bent Tree Country Club, which borders Lake Sarasota, to the east.

The neighborhood is also bordered by I-75 to the west, Bee Ridge Road to the north, and Proctor Road to the south. Given Lake Sarasota's great location, it lends easy access to all that Sarasota and the Suncoast area have to offer. It is a perfect neighborhood for families, with reasonably priced home within close proximity to great shopping and restaurants, as well as excellent schools and the nearby Doctor's Hospital. There are a number of championship golf courses within a few miles, the beaches and Downtown Sarasota are only a short drive away, and nearby Rothenbach and Urfer Family Parks offer playgrounds, nature walks, and picnics for the family.

Most of the homes in Lake Sarasota, about eighty-five percent, are the classic and popular Florida single-family, single-story, mid-size ranch homes built between 1970 and 1999. Yet, a number of residences were built between 2000 and the present, largely resulting in two distinct neighborhoods. This offers homebuyers a choice of well-maintained older homes or newer deed-restricted properties. The majority of the homes have three or four bedrooms, but there are also a number of studios and two-bedroom homes, as well as a few apartment buildings.

The median price of a home in Lake Sarasota ranges from $212,000 to $230,000, and about seventy-five percent of Lake Sarasota residents own their homes. There are a few retirees that have chosen Lake Sarasota as their home, but the average age of a Lake Sarasota resident is thirty-seven, and there are a large number of working families with careers in a variety of occupations.

Though Lake Sarasota had its beginning as a tourist attraction, it has since become a community, no longer offering only the Florida dream vacation. With its low crime rate, excellent location, affordable prices, and family-friendly neighborhood vibe, it now offers the dream life of living in Florida.
