Southgate: A Retro Neighborhood Central to All Things Sarasota

When it comes to soaking up a Sarasota lifestyle, the Southgate community is a great option for getting right in the middle of things. Located in central Sarasota just east of U.S.-41, Southgate covers just over two square miles, bordered by Bee Ridge Road to the south, Beneva Road to the east, and Arlington Park to the north. Initially developed in the 1960s, Southgate has expanded greatly from there, featuring easy access to downtown and a plethora of shops, restaurants, and other amenities.

The homes in Southgate are largely one-story, as was the trend in the sixties. Many of the homeowners are enhancing the neighborhood's “retro” vibe, making the most of the architecture to create a suburban-chic feel while maintaining its family-friendly allure.

One of the key amenities of the Southgate neighborhood is the South Gate Community Center, located at 3145 South Gate Circle. The historic mid-century building was designed by Sarasota School of Architecture architect Victor Lundy, and the open glass walls looking out onto Phillippi Creek make a serene backdrop for parties, weddings, and other community events. The five-acre property also features a community swimming pool, open all summer and available to community members for a reasonable membership fee.

Southgate is just minutes from Siesta Key, but for those who love the water, Southgate features a hidden gem. With a kayak launch at Pine Craft Park to the north of the neighborhood, Phillippi Creek offers many Southgate residents direct access to Sarasota Bay, and the park itself features exquisite trails that preserve the best of old, natural Florida.

For golfers, the Village Green Golf Club has 18 holes to help perfect your game. Complete with water hazards, sand traps, and rolling greens, this often-overlooked course is an inexpensive way to get some time on the links, with affordable day rates as well as annual, monthly, and summer memberships. Many Southgate residents also appreciate close access to the Arlington Park community's two pools, outdoor athletic courts, picnic area, gym, playground, walking trail, and dog park.

For shopping, the Westfield Southgate mall's recent upgrades are attracting several new shops as well as some local favorites, such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Talbots, and Macy's. A Gymboree for the kids and the Venus Mini Med Spa for adults are even more features Southgate residents enjoy. The recent addition of CineBistro, where moviegoers get to enjoy gourmet meals in comfortable lounge chairs, has also made quite a splash.

Nearby Southgate Village includes a number of great shops, restaurants, and bars, including Cup Cakes A Go-Go, Tropical Shores, Gourmet Popcorn, and Baker & Wife. Pop Craft's recent move there is reason enough to buy in Southgate just for close access to their gourmet popsicles!
