Food, Fashion, Finery, and Fun in Sarasota's Southside Village

Just under two miles from downtown Sarasota, Southside Village has become a quaint little destination for shopping, dining and nightlife. West of the Trail by Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Center, these few blocks surrounding Hillview Avenue have evolved over the last several years, developing into a charming collection of restaurants, boutiques, and much more. Nestled within diverse architecture of the surrounding neighborhoods, ranging from century-old homes to modern mansions, Southside Village is the heart of a vital and eclectic part of Sarasota.

There are a number of shopping opportunities for the fashion-conscious. Fashionistas love the RHA Boutique and Tina’s on Osprey. Fifi's Fine Resale Apparel and Beautiful You Boutique are two notable shops showcasing high-end upcycled and consigned clothing. Southside Village also offers a few great specialty shops, notably Sea Cup and Up, specializing in custom-fit swimwear and lingerie.

Southside Village also features a few places devoted to the finer things: Coffrin Jewelers has a beautiful assortment of watches and other accessories, and Silver Obsession expands from jewelry into a number of other gifts and adornments. And for those who like to create their own fashion, Eye of the Needle has all the sewing supplies you'll need to craft whatever you can imagine.

But like so many places in Sarasota, what makes Southside Village delectable is the food. Knick's Tavern is one of the leading contenders for the best burger in town, and the same can be said about the sushi at Pacific Rim. If you're looking for a light, healthy lunch, the Southside Deli is sure to have what you're in the mood for, and they make great smoothies, too. The Hillview Grill is a neighborhood favorite for casual dining, offering great steaks and seafood, and Libby's has delightful options for vegan and gluten-free dining. What's also great about Southside Village is what you can take home. Right across the street from Libby's, Morton's Gourmet Market has a wonderful array of edible treasures and arguably one of the best delis in town.

The mainstay of Southside Village nightlife is the Five O'Clock Club, which has live music every night of the week. Even before they moved the smoking area to the outside lounge, the Five O'Clock Club has been one of Sarasota's favorite places to see live bands and memorable jams, such as the notorious pairing of the Allman Brothers' Dickie Betts and AC/DC's Brian Johnson. They also host the annual “Give Hunger the Blues” street party every spring, one of the few times of the year when Southside Village blocks off automobile traffic and becomes a new world of pedestrians, vendors, and music enthusiasts.

Although it's off the beaten paths of St. Armands, Siesta Village, or downtown Sarasota, Southside Village has secured its place in the hearts of its neighbors as a great place to shop, eat, and live.
