In addition to being the #1 beach in the country (according to Dr. Beach), Siesta Key Beach also hosts some of the best events in Sarasota. One of the most astounding happenings is the Siesta Key Crystal Classic, a four-day master sand sculpting competition that just keeps getting better every year. Going way beyond any sand castles you have seen before, 24 artists will go to work from November 14-18 to create mammoth sculptures out of Siesta Key Beach's powder-fine sand. I can't wait to see what they come up with this year!

This is the fifth year for the Crystal Classic, and over 35,000 people are expected to come out and watch the magic happen. Fortunately, plenty of trams, buses and shuttles will be cruising around to get you there so you don't get caught up in the traffic. Once you're at the event, in addition to the master sculptors, you can visit plenty of local vendors offering great food, drinks, and artwork.

In the midst of all of this excitement and creativity, one of the best things about the Siesta Key Crystal Classic is that it's at Siesta Key Beach. The beach is an attraction in and of itself! So if you want to take some time off from watching the sculptures come to life, take a short stroll to one of the kiosks where you can rent a bicycle, or to take kayaks and paddleboards out on the water.

If you've dabbled in the art of sand sculpting yourself, you might want to sign up for the amateur competition set to start on the second day of the event. And if you're a complete novice, or just want to learn a few tricks of the trade, sand sculpting demonstrations will be held every day of the event. If all that isn't enough, throughout the four days you can also catch performances by some of Sarasota's favorite bands, including Olivia Little and the Alter Egos, Ari and the Alibis, and Have Gun, Will Travel.

With all the work Mote Marine Laboratory does for Sarasota wildlife, it's good to know that proceeds from the $6 admission price will go to support their efforts. This time of year, you just can't beat the weather in Sarasota, and since the water's getting a bit cold for some of us locals, I love that the Siesta Key Crystal Classic is offering up four incredible days at the beach. Be sure to check out the Siesta Key Crystal Classic, just one of the reasons that Siesta Key Beach is the #1 beach in the country.
